In the weeks leading up to a Brooklyn high school’s student/teacher dance competition, one all-female team prepares for a sellout crowd as they juggle college prep, family pressure, and packed schedules. Dancing with the Teachers explores how this Little Haiti community is redefining success in the face of systemic challenges, as told through the voice of modern day youth.
We anticipate beginning our festival run in spring 2026.
Amidst the headlines of decline and despair, this film focuses on a beacon of joy and perseverance: Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School, and the extraordinary spirit of its students and teachers.
This documentary centers on the school’s annual Dancing with the Teachers event, a vibrant celebration that embodies the energy, camaraderie, and shared purpose that drive this school. What makes this friendly competition so unique is the way it fosters authentic intergenerational bonds that transcend the traditional academic hierarchy—over the course of the competition, teachers and students become peers, partners, and co-conspirators with one shared goal. From hip hop to salsa (and a healthy dose of twerking), the students and teachers meet each other on their own terms, creating a palpable sense of belonging and pride that echoes far beyond the dance floor.
CRB’s story is one of hope and possibility, set against the backdrop of Little Haiti, a neighborhood facing unique challenges amplified by current national news and events. The school's model offers a compelling example of what is possible when institutions prioritize student success, identity, and joy.
Dancing with the Teachers is more than a fundraiser or a dance competition; it’s a celebration of transformation, community, and the unbreakable human spirit. By focusing on this event and the stories behind it, I hope to inspire broader conversations about education reform and the importance of fostering environments where young people can thrive against all odds.
